Angels we have heard on high
by Jacques Lauzier, o.p.
«Glory to God in the highest heaven!» (Luke 2, 14)
In a few days we will be celebrating the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, over a thousand years ago. This small child of Nazareth was the Son of God and God Himself. And it was by Him that the Universe was created, including the Earth. And yet, on this occasion, the earth did not tremble in Bethlehem, neither anywhere else. But Heaven, knowing what was happening, opened up for all mankind and explained the marvel that had just happened. «A child has been born to you»… A God has been given to you!
The first to receive this message were the shepherds of Bethlehem: poor and humble, ignored by the top brass and scholars of Israel but favoured by the Lord. They were indeed Christianity’s first advertisers of the Good News, followed by strangers from Orient, the three Wise Men. The Scribes and Pharisees did not know about it, being too busy with their knowledge and their social status.
Even today, Heaven tries its best to multiply the announcements of the Good News by all sorts of means and prophets. But who distinguish them? Who listens to them? Because the «world» screams louder than the prophets. The gifts, the Christmas meals and the technological novelties have buried their voices. Only the «meek», the «impoverished» of heart and those «deaf» to the seductions of the world will hear the voices that will song «Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace for those he favours.»
In which group shall we be?
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL!
