The Monthly Note
November 2010
The days are shorter and shorter
«A sower went out to sow…» Matthew 13.3
by Benoît Lacroix, O.P.
The days are shorter and shorter. The birds have almost all left. The leaves have almost all fallen. It is the month of November: the month of departure.
In Liturgy: all souls month, all saints month. The month that, also, reminds us of the earth that falls asleep.
Maybe we can say that November is the month of contemplation. Contemplation calls for silence, quiet prayer, meditation, inner life until the end of the day.
The time has come to trust the naked tree’s, root, trunk and branches. Or even to trust the earth that falls asleep until April.
November is the season of those who, according to the friends ofSaint-Jude, do not lose hope. Snow will come and will not see the ground anymore. From the trees, we will see only the trunk. And yet, life continues. The earth prepares itself for spring. The roots dream of the leaves to come.
This is this month’s message to the friends ofSaint-Jude. Do not lose hope! Time passes, the earth works, the roots scheme underground.
It is the same with your spiritual life, from the best of your hopes and your faith. Jesus tells us in His way: It is the same of the kingdom of our inner life as is the Kingdom of God that the Lord speaks of: «The Kingdom of God is like someone who planted seeds in the ground : whether he sleeps or whether he awakens, night or day, the seed sprouts and grows, and the worker does not know how. By itself, the earth first produces grass, then the cob, then a cob full of wheat…»
May November’s spiritual seed be in your favour!
